Chanca Piedra has been used as a medicinal plant in South and Central America as a way to treat gallstones, liver problems, and kidney stones painlessly for centuries.
Its scientific name is Phyllanthus niruri, which literally translates to “Stone Breaker.”

Chanca Piedra Research And Studies
During the 1990s and early 2000s, the use of Chanca Piedra was the subject of a number of studies specifically conducted about its effect on kidney stones. Among these studies were:
Conducted in 1990
Dr. Wolfram Wiemann: Recorded treating more than 100 patients suffering from kidney stones which Chanca Piedra that he had obtained from Peru. According to his research, 94% of his patient’s kidney stones were eliminated within 2 weeks.
The Paulista School of Medicine in Sao Paulo, Brazil conducted tests on both humans and rats with kidney stones. Subjects were given a tea made from Chanca Piedra over the course of 1 to 3 months. Results from the study showed an increase in urine output, the excretion of increased amounts of creatine and sodium, and most importantly, the elimination of kidney stones (5).
Conducted in 1999
An in-vitro clinical study the use of an extract of Chanca Piedra was found to block the formation of calcium oxalate crystals (responsible for the formation of kidney stones). This is seen as proof that Chanca Piedra may be useful as a preventative for those with a history of kidney stones or who may be genetically predisposed to their formation(6).
Conducted in 2003
During another in vitro study using Chanca Piedra, it was found that this natural “medicine” was very capable of preventing the development of kidney stones. The report showed that Chanca Piedra has the ability to interfere during the early stages of kidney stone formation and may, in fact, be an acceptable alternative form of prevention in the treatment of urolithiasis. (7)
As you can see, there has been much research into the efficacy of Chanca Piedra and its effects on kidney stones. The results of these studies all seem to indicate that it can not only break up both kidney and gallbladder stones so that they can be eliminated from the body via urination, but that it can also be used as a preventative for those who are susceptible to either of these conditions.
Is It Safe To Use?
Chanca Piedra is available in capsules, tinctures, and herbal teas.
Each of these can be used with similar results and can be taken on a regular basis.
However, it should not be used by pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding as there is a risk of low birth weight or birth defects.
Since it may also slow down blood clotting, those with a bleeding disorder should not use Chanca Piedra.
It also affects blood sugar levels and may cause unexpected drops in blood sugar. If you have diabetes you must monitor your blood sugar levels carefully and, to stay on the safe side, avoid taking Chanka Piedra in any form.
