Fasting diets have always been a popular alternative for people to try because of their acclaimed “cleansing properties” and the quick results that people usually see from them. One fasting diet that has become noticed by the media is known as the Lemonade Diet. Many people have claimed that this diet works incredibly well, and that they have seen results. Let’s review it a bit, shall we?
What is the Lemonade Diet?
The Lemonade Diet has actually been around for a long time (since the 1960’s), but it really didn’t get a lot of public recognition until a few years back when Beyonce used it. Beyonce claimed that she lost about 20 pounds from the Lemonade diet, right before she filmed the movie Dreamgirls. Since then, many people (from celebrities to the masses) have tried it out to see if it would work.
The Lemonade diet was started by Stanley Burroughs, a nutritionist who called the Lemonade diet “the Master Cleanse” and it tried using it with a number of his clients. This diet is incredibly restrictive, and it involves drinking, as you would imagine, a juice that has a lemon base. But, it is also a fasting diet. You can actually fast on the Lemonade Diet for up to two weeks (even though that is far from recommended). It is considered to be a good plan if you are trying to lose weight quickly.
Lemonade Diet Meal Plan
The Lemonade Diet meal plan is called a fasting diet, because essentially, you are eating no solid foods. You’re not taking any supplements; either (not even your daily multivitamin). Here’s what a typical day on the Lemonade Diet Looks like:
- Morning: You wake up, drink a salt water flush (2 tsp of salt in a quart of water), and then a serving of the “Lemonade” mixture.
- Throughout the day, you drink four or more servings of the “lemonade” mixture.
- Shortly before bed, you consume one more serving (for a total of 6 or more servings throughout the day). You can also drink an herbal laxative tea, if you wish.
That’s it. You keep this up for four to fourteen days, and you will start seeing results and weight loss. After you are done with your fast, slowly ease back into solid foods. Start with soups, salads, fruits, and vegetables, and then work your way back into eating meats and other “tough” foods.

- 2 tablespoons grade-B organic maple syrup
- 1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Does the Lemonade Diet Actually Work?
Like all fasting diets, it definitely works. You’re going to lose weight when you don’t eat solid foods and if you are only drinking a handful of calories a day. But there are a lot of issues that professionals see in the lemonade diet, including the fact that the calorie deficit is incredibly steep, and you are, essentially, starving yourself. Nutritionists point out that the Lemonade Diet is lacking in all the essential nutrients: calories, vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat.
So if you’re starving yourself, is it working? Not really. Instead of losing fat, you are likely losing water weight and muscle, which is contrary to what you want. And the fasting time isn’t very pleasant either; you’ll feel hungry, get headaches, feel tired, and you even may get dizzy.
Does the lemonade diet work? Only if the important detail to you is the number, and not what’s actually being lost. As a general rule, fasting diets are always risky. Your body cleanses itself on its own, and you lose important nutrients that help keep you healthy. It may be effective if you used it as a kick start to a different type of diet, and only did it for a couple of days, but other than that, the choice is up to you.
