Natural Remedies for Water Brash

What Causes Water Brash?

Water brash is a symptom of GERD, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

When stomach acid gets into your throat it can cause you to salivate much more than usual – this is called Water Brash. This unpleasant symptom is often seen with other signs of GERD such as heartburn, vomiting, and sore throat.

Normally, a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter keeps stomach acid from entering your throat. When this muscle has trouble closing all the way, acid is able escape into the throat and mouth.

Over time, this can lead to GERD, which causes damage to the throat. If left untreated, this damage can lead to much worse complications like cancer.

Is There a Difference Between Water Brash and Acid Brash?

The term water brash usually refers only to the extra saliva in your mouth that you may experience when acid leaves your stomach. When that stomach acid enters your mouth and mixes with the saliva, it is then referred to as acid brash.

However, these two terms are often used interchangeably. If you are experiencing water brash, chances are that there is some acid present – this is what causes you to salivate.

How is Water Brash Usually Treated?

Doctors will often prescribe antacids or acid reducers to help with water brash and other symptoms of GERD. These medications reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces, which will ease symptoms.

While these medications are readily prescribed, more and more research is showing they can cause harm.

Acid reducers like PPIs (proton-pump inhibitors) and H2 Blockers can make it harder for your body to break down food. They can also limit the amount of vitamins that your body is able to absorb.

Another problem with these antacids is that they can allow bacteria to grow in your stomach – stomach acid usually kills these bacteria, but if you don’t make enough acid, the bacteria can grow out of control.

Even over-the-counter antacids like calcium carbonate (found in tablets like Tums) can cause problems. Taking too much of these can actually cause your stomach to produce even more acid than normal!

Your stomach wants to be acidic – when you take medications to reduce acid levels, your stomach will try to make up for it by producing too much. Over time, this can make water brash and other symptoms worse.

What About Natural Antacids?

All antacids, even natural ones, can cause problems over time. Baking soda is sometimes recommended as a natural antacid, but using this can be dangerous.

It is possible to overdose on baking soda, especially for people with heart disease or high blood pressure.

Some teas like chamomile and slippery elm have been proven to help calm symptoms of GERD like water brash.

These herbal teas are able to provide relief without reducing the amount of stomach acid you produce. Another way to find relief from water brash is to try a supplement called Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice, or DGL.

DGL will increase the amount of protective mucus in your digestive tract. When taken before meals, DGL can help protect your stomach and throat from the burning effects of stomach acid.

Always check with a medical professional before starting any supplements or herbal remedies. Even teas, which may seem harmless, can interact with medications or make some conditions worse.

When choosing supplements, be sure to use brands that have independent lab testing done. This proves that the product you’re buying contains what it’s supposed to and doesn’t use any fillers.

Can Water Brash Be Prevented?

The best way to deal with water brash is to prevent it.

Water brash and GERD can have a number of different causes, so experiment with the tips below to see what makes your symptoms better!

1. Avoid Foods That Worsen Symptoms

There are many foods that make your stomach produce more acid and make your symptoms worse. These include:

  • Caffeine
  • Chocolate
  • High-fat foods
  • Spicy Foods
  • Citrus

Reduce body fat if you’re overweight. Extra body fat can put pressure on your stomach.

Remember the esophageal sphincter, the muscle that keeps acid from getting into your throat?

The pressure put on your stomach by extra fat will force the sphincter open, causing water brash to worsen.

2. Check Your Magnesium Levels

It is quite possible you have low magnesium levels. Magnesium helps the sphincter relaxed in your lower esophagus.

3. Avoid Tight Clothing Around Meal Times

4. Avoid Laying Down After Meals

Laying down after you eat will make it easier for acid to flow out of your stomach and into your throat. If you want to relax after eating, prop yourself up with pillows so that your chest is elevated above your stomach.

5. Try Not To Overeat

Eating until you’re stuffed will make water brash much worse. Instead, try eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. This will help prevent water brash symptoms and also help with stomach ulcers, which can sometimes be seen in people with GERD.

6. Don’t Eat Late At Night

Eating before bedtime is never a good idea for people with water brash. You want to stop eating about 3 hours before you go to bed – this will give your stomach enough time to digest the food and empty it into your small intestine.

When your stomach is done digesting food, it will stop producing stomach acid.

7. Quit Smoking And Drink Less Alcohol

Nicotine and alcohol are known to make water brash worse. Cutting these two things out alone will go a long way to ease your GERD symptoms. You’ll also be improving your health overall!
