The Flex Belt is a belt that looks just like a back support brace. But instead of supporting your back, it is an FDA-approved abdomen toning belt that uses something called electro-muscular stimulation in order to get the job done. Basically, the electrical impulses in The Flex Belt stimulate the motor nerves of major abdominal muscles. This, in turn is supposed to make your abdomen react the same way that it would if you were doing crunches or some other abdominal exercises. The belt has 3 gel pads positioned on the central abdomen and external obliques. It has several settings, ranging from gentle pulsing to more intense, deep contracting.

The Flex Belt in Action

The belt can be worn almost anywhere. Some people who support the use of The Flex Belt have used the belt at work, at home, at school, or walking around the grocery store. That’s the point of this belt- convenience. The manufacturers recommend that you use the belt for 30 minutes every single day until you have the results that you want, and then you knock it down to twice or three times a week to maintain your progress.

So how does it work? The Flex Belt works all of the muscles by using the signals in areas that they contact nerves. They stimulate the muscles, which make them contract and relax naturally. Everything is relaxed at the same time. You will actually feel the tightening of your abdominal muscles for a couple of seconds, and then they will relax. In a 30 minute session, there are 150 contractions (about 5 per minute).

That seems rather simple, right? Of course, the manufacturers are careful to tell you that you won’t see any progress if you do not maintain a regular diet and exercise program as well. They aren’t trying to pull the “miracle cure” card, which is admirable in today’s day in age.

The Flex Belt Overview

This is where the questions get difficult. First, there are some concerns by professionals about using electro-muscular stimulation for toning. Electro-muscular stimulation is used in rehabilitation programs, but that is by professionals who are trained to use electro-muscular stimulation devices. You are messing with electricity, and because of that, you have to be really careful. If you use it wrong, it can really cause some permanent damage.

The Flex Belt also hasn’t had a lot of clinical trials yet, so it is hard to say whether or not it works. On their website, the manufacturers claim that everyone they have talked to has seen a change in their abs and felt as if they were more toned, but that doesn’t mean that it’s going to work for everyone. Like every successful weight loss and/or fitness program, there needs to be clinical trials in order to prove effectiveness.

If you want a program like this and you aren’t nervous about the electro-muscular stimulation technology, then by all means, it may be worth giving The Flex Belt a try. Others who have used The Flex Belt and reported about it online all said they have seen minimal results. You would get much more from 20-30 minutes of abdominal exercises on a daily basis which would be a much better alternative.
